Life Lesson

"There is not substitute for hard work and integrity"

Eric Roberts was born on January 12th, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York. He lived in Brooklyn until he was four and then moved to Belle Harbor, Queens. He has one daughter and two granddaughters. He also has two older twin sisters.

Eric went to College at Princeton University and graduated in 1964. At Princeton, he majored in History and then went to Columbia University where he earned a Masters degree in Business. After graduating from Columbia he went to Brooklyn Law School and graduated in 1969. Throughout his life, Eric worked at AA Truck Renting and in the mid, to late 1970s he became President of the company. Before this, while still in High School, Eric worked one summer on Wall Street.

Eric says that his three most important lessons in life are one, “treat others as you would like them to treat you,” two, “you can learn something from everyone, irrespective of their position in life” and three, “there is no substitute for hard work.” He says that when he started working in his family's business (truck leasing) he learned that he could expand his knowledge of the business both by speaking with the lowest-level employees, as well as senior management. He says that “people are still people whether they have a college degree or just practical experience in the world.” Another important lesson Eric learned while President of AA Truck Renting was “that having a plan is critical to success in life.” and that “with failure comes added wisdom and that with persistence everyone can accomplish their goal(s).”
